Tarr Béla Retrospektív
For five days in January, we celebrate one of the most outstanding directors in Hungarian cinema with five of his outstanding films. First up is 1987's "Damnation/Kárhozat", which brought Tarr international acclaim and set him on the road to becoming a cult figure in contemporary auteur cinema. Then came 1981's "Szabadgyalog/The outsider": The defining work of Béla Tarr's documentary period, it is at once sociographically precise and existentially profound. This will be followed by 2000's "Werckmeister Harmonies", the major work of Béla Tarr and László Krasznahorkai, alongside "Sátántangó" and "Damnation". A philosophy of existence, apocalypse and the calvary of a holy fool. Then, the first direction of Béla Tarr, 22 years old in 1987, a cordial documentary, a sociological vision and a brutally honest exploration of petty human relations. And finally, the grandiose "Sátántangó", a kind of perpetuum mobile, a structure of being manifested through a chain of deception and rupture, with no responsible party, only a state of being, on which various beliefs, hopes and self-deceptions are projected....
